Va-i-Moana Seaside Lodge RESORT $$

The family has reclaimed the land and its small white-sand beach, and transformed one old building into air-con rooms – but the more interesting options are the rickety, enclosed fale, some of which are perched on stilts over the surf. There’s a good restaurant here, lots of effort to please customers, free kayaks and fishing tours on offer (from ST150 for three to four hours).

Vaisala Beach Hotel HOTEL $

The rooms are dated but comfortable; if you’re lucky, you might get a shifting-image holy picture on the wall. All rooms have terraces and an extra ST20 will nab you the much better ones down near the beach. The hotel’s restaurant also has an outdoor deck and serves filling set-menu dinners (ST45).

Falealupo Beach Fales FALE $

Offline map ( 774 7420; www.falealupobeachfales.ws; Falealupo Rd, Falealupo; fale per person incl breakfast & dinner ST60) The beach is gorgeous, the fale simple and the family absent. We found no one here when we passed, and travellers who stayed here reported hardly seeing the owners.
